Andrew Chambers,

BA, CEng, FCCA, FCA, FBCS, CITP, FRSA, FIIA

Andrew is director of Management Audit LLP who specialise in advising on audit and corporate governance.  He is author of the May 2005 books: Tottel’s Corporate Governance Handbook (ISBN 1 845 92082 1, 1400 pages) and Tolley’s Internal Auditor’s Handbook (ISBN 0 406 95209 4, 750 pages).  He has written several books on computer auditing. 

Andrew is a member of the UK Auditing Practices Board and of Fédération des Experts Comptables Européen’s (FEE’s) Corporate Governance and Company Law Committee (Brussels).  Until end-2005 he served on the Corporate Governance Committee of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.  He now chairs the Corporate Governance and Risk Management Committee of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants.  He is a Council member of The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations and chairs their audit committee. 

Andrew is currently a part-time professor of internal auditing at London South Bank University and a visiting professor at the University of Central England.  He is Professor Emeritus of London’s City University where he was Dean of what is now the leading Cass Business School.  More recently he was Professor of Audit and Control at the University of Hull.  He has served as a director of The Institute of Internal Auditors Inc. and as a member of their standards setting board.  He was founder general editor of Blackwell’s International Journal of Auditing from 1995 to 2003.  Until 2006 he had for ten years edited the monthly newsletter Internal Control (published by CCH for ICAEW - ISSN 1367-2517).   

As a non-executive director, Andrew chaired the audit committee of a FTSE250 financial institution for eight years until 2003 and prior to that their remuneration committee.  He has been a non-executive director of an NHS Acute Hospital Trust and a member of their remuneration and audit committees.  In July 2006 Andrew and the other independent directors resigned from the board of a large non-life mutual whose audit committee he chaired.

Within the last few months consulting clients have included Shell, The United Nations, British Waterways, Shepherd Construction, NAAFI and the Bulgarian Ministries of Health and of Regional Development.

Before joining the academic staff of City University Business School in 1971, Andrew had two posts in industry with Barker & Dobson and United Biscuits, the former being in charge of internal audit.  Prior to that Andrew had joined Arthur Andersen from University, with whom he qualified as a chartered accountant.

Andrew has been on the Council and the Technical Board of the British Computer Society.  His engineering qualifications are in the field of software engineering.

 Paul Moxey

 Paul Moxey is Head of Corporate Governance and Risk Management at ACCA. Paul is responsible for ACCA’s policies on corporate governance and risk management and is a leading contributor to its responses to global developments in this area. Paul has held senior positions in industry including group financial controller of a UK public company. Before joining ACCA, he was a consultant specialising in corporate governance. The UK Department of Health commissioned him to write much of its corporate governance guidance to health service organisations. He has also worked directly with a number of these to introduce effective governance and risk management.

Dr Hans-Christoph Hirt

Associate Director – Head of European Corporate Governance

Hermes Equity Ownership Services Ltd

Hans heads the European Corporate Governance team at Hermes which is responsible for developing and implementing corporate governance policies and shareholder engagement programmes in Continental Europe. He is also involved in campaigning across Europe for regulation reflecting best corporate governance practice. Furthermore, he works with Hermes’ European Focus Fund providing analysis of individual companies and developing and implementing company specific engagement strategies.

Prior to Hermes, Hans spent two years with the leading international law firm Ashurst during which he worked in the corporate, banking and litigation departments. Whilst at Ashurst, he was seconded to the Court of Appeal where he held the position of judicial assistant to the Master of the Rolls, Lord Phillips. Before joining Ashurst, he was a researcher and teaching assistant at the London School of Economics. Throughout his academic and professional career, he has carried out extensive research covering in particular corporate governance, European company law and shareholder remedies and has published widely in these areas in leading corporate law journals.

Recent publications in journals include: 'The Review of the Role and Effectiveness of Non-Executive Directors: A Critical Assessment with Particular Reference to the German Two-tier Board System' (2003), 'Regulation of Directors' Remuneration: The German Approach, the DTI's Consultation Paper and the Way Forward' (2004), 'Freedom of Establishment, International Company Law and the Comparison of European Company Law Systems after the ECJ's Decision in Inspire Art Ltd' (2004), 'The Company’s Decision to Litigate Against its Directors: Legal Strategies to Deal with the Board of Directors’ Conflict of Interest' (2005) and 'The Enforcement of Directors’ Duties pursuant to the Aktiengesetz: Present Law and Reform in Germany' (2005). He has also published a book entitled 'The Enforcement of Directors' Duties in Britain and Germany' (2004).

Most recently, together with Colin Melvin, he wrote 'Corporate Governance and Performance', a brief review and assessment of the evidence for a link between corporate governance and performance.

Hans obtained a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics where he was a Wedderburn Scholar after gaining an LL.M. at the University of Glasgow. He also has a B.A. Honours in European Business Administration, holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and is a Diplom-Betriebswirt (ESB-Reutlingen). In 2002, Hans qualified as a solicitor in the UK.

Nicos M. Christodoulakis
MP for Chania, PASOK
Professor of economics (Athens University of Economics).

He was born in Chania 1952. He has one daughter.

As a student he actively participated in the uprising at the Technical University of Athens in 1973 against the military dictatorship. Awarded the First National Prize by the Hellenic Mathematical Society (1970). In 1984 he was awarded the John Winbolt Prize from Cambridge University for distinguished international publication.
He is member of many scientific and research societies and committees.
He wrote the books: "The new growth perspective" (1998), "Economic Growth and Fluctuations in Greece and EU" (co-authored 1997), "Modeling and Control of National Economies" (collective 1990), "Macroeconomic Policy: Inflation Wealth and the Exchange Rate" (collective 1989), "Control Systems and Economic Applications" (1988).

 Ken Rushton

Senior Advisor, Nestor Advisors

Ken Rushton joined Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) in 1968 after graduating in law from Trinity College, Dublin.  After a career in the company secretarial function of many of ICI’s Divisions in the UK, he was appointed Company Secretary in 1996.  He took early retirement at the end of 1999 to take up the position of Director of the Institute of Business Ethics.  In 2001, he was appointed to the Financial Services Authority as Director of Listing and Head of the UK Listing Authority.  From 2004 he was responsible for directing the review of the UK Listing regime.

Ken was formerly a member of the Listing Rules Committee and the Department of Trade and Industry’s Company Law Review Consultative Committee.  He was also a member of the Confederation of British Industry Companies Committee and the OECD Task Force on Corporate Governance.

Ken is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. 

Ken retired from the Financial Services Authority at the end of 2004 and is currently working as Senior Advisor for Nestor Advisors and is an Advisor to the Financial Reporting Council. He is a member of the Institute of Charter Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) Corporate Governance Committee.

Dr Panikkos Poutziouris

 He is Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Family Business at the CIIM Business School (Cyprus) and Visiting Fellow in Family Business Initiatives at Manchester Business School (UK). He lectures, researches, publishes and consults internationally on entrepreneurial management and the strategic financial development of family firms.  He is the founder vice-president of the International Family Enterprise Research Academy and previously served on the advisory board of the Institute for Family Business (UK). In 2004, he has been honoured with the Family Firms Institute - Hollander Award for his work in promoting the family business theme.

His recent research into UK Family Controlled Quoted Companies, in cooperation with the Institute for Family Business (UK) and with the support of UBS-Wealth Management, has been featured extensively by the Financial Times and the global business media. In a nutshell, the Family Business Index which reveals that family controlled – PLCs outperforms their FTSE peers by 40% offer support to the growing view that that optimal family shareholding control is stimulus to superior performance.

Dr Poutziouris will offer a presentation on his investigation into the UK Family Business PLC economy, and via the prism of case studies will expound key factors governing the super-performance of family controlled quoted companies.

Katerina Antoniou

 Katerina qualified as Chartered Accountant in 1994 with Arthur Andersen in London. She holds a masters degree in Music Information Technology  and a Bachelors degree in Music. She is a member of the ICPAC and various other finance related committees.

Katerina has been with Deloitte & Touche since November 2005. She is leading the firm’s EQAR function, and provides strong support to the Reputation and Risk Leader and the Ethics and Compliance partner. She also deals with Corporate Finance matters and Financial Advisory.

 Katerina worked for the Cyprus Stock Exchange from November 1996 to September 2005 at the position of the CFO and Head of Human Resources and Administration. In addition to her above duties she dealt extensively with International Financial Reporting Standards and Corporate Governance matters. She was involved in general corporate and finance issues such as due diligence, business valuations, the review and approval process of listing new companies at the Cyprus Stock Exchange as well as monitoring their continuous obligations as listed companies. Her function involved proposals for the formation of policies, laws and regulations around financial matters, negotiations with the Board, the Ministry of Finance and the Attorney’s General’s Office for approval of such policies.  

 Katerina is part of Deloitte’s training team. She has delivered training sessions on International Financial Reporting Standards, Reputation and Risk as well as Ethical matters.  She has lectured on a number of national and international seminars on IFRS’s and Risk Management.

Professor Marco Becht
Professor of Finance and Economics
Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB)

Marco Becht is a Professor of Finance and Economics at Université Libre de Bruxelles, a Resident Fellow at the European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics at ULB and the Executive Director of the European Corporate Governance Institute. Teaching at the ULB, his research currently focuses on law and finance, with particular emphasis on corporate governance. In 2003, he was Visiting Professor at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford

Having worked at the Centro de Estudios Monetarios y Financieros in Madrid and at the European Commission's Directorate for Industry, Marco is a member of the Belgian Corporate Governance Commission and a Senior Adviser to Oxera, the economic consultancy. He has been a member of the Policy Committee of the European Confederation of Directors’ Associations and the European Academic Council of Standard & Poor's. From 1998 to 2002, he was Scientific Adviser, Committee on Corporate Governance, European Association of Securities Dealers.

Marco has been involved in consulting projects for the European Commission and major European banks. He has been instrumental in launching the Transatlantic Corporate Governance Dialogue (TCGD) and is the scientist in charge of the European Corporate Governance Training Network (ECGTN).

He has given expert briefings on corporate governance to the Group of Economic Analysis of the President of the European Commission, Alcatel, BP, EdF, the boards of Andra AP Fonden and Arlington Capital’s European Renaissance Fund, the clients of Hermes Pension Management Ltd, the Euro 50 Group, the Italian Securities Regulator (CONSOB), the OECD and the World Bank, among others

Dr Marios Mavrides

 Marios Mavrides completed his doctorate degree in Economics at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 1991 and he is also Certified Public Accountant in the USA.  His dissertation was on the efficiency of the Foreign Exchange Markets and was published into a book.  Mr. Mavrides published several papers in Cypriot as well as international journals and he presented papers in many conferences.  He has also presented many seminars in the area of economics and has delivered many speeches in various events in Cyprus.  His research interests include the efficiency of the foreign exchange and stock markets, the Cyprus economy and corporate governance.  Over the years Mr. Mavrides has worked in academic institutions and in the industry as a investment advisor, financial analyst and a consultant.  He is now working at Cyprus College in Nicosia where he holds the position of Associate Professor.  He also holds a Chair in Accounting offered by KPMG in Cyprus.  He also publishes several articles every week in the newspapers and he is also presenting a daily TV program on economic issues.  

Mr. Mavrides was born in Karpasia village, in the Kerynia district of Cyprus. He is married and he has a son.

Ioannis Kasoulides

Ioannis Kasoulides (born August 10 1948 in Nicosia) is a Cypriot politician, was one of the leading officials of the right-wing Democratic Rally party and served as Foreign minister in the Glafcos Clerides government from 1997 until 2003.

In June 2004, he has been elected Member of the European Parliament. He is now a Member of the Bureau of the European People's Party and sits on the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs. He is also Vice-Chairman of the Delegation for relations with the Palestinian Legislative Council, and Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee for Human Rights in Western Sahara.

Kasoulides studied medicine at University of Lyon in France and specialised in geriatrics in London. He worked in the private sector after returning to Cyprus.

He is also founder and first chairman of the Federation of Cypriot Students Union in France, served at various party posts and was elected deputy in 1991.

In March 1993 he undertook the post of Government Spokesman and resigned from Parliament and retained his position until April 1997 when he was appointed Foreign Minister until 28 February 2003.

As Minister, Kasoulides led the diplomatic service during efforts for Cyprus' Accession to the European Union and was mainly responsible for the political part of the negotiations.

Kasoulides is known as a moderate and progressive politician with fresh ideas and an open mind. He has made a name for himself as a devoted patriot but a staunch opponent of populist and nationalist attitudes. Kasoulides has a wide and deep international reach. He is much respected in the EU and is seen as a heavyweight challenger to the current President of Cyprus for the 2008 Presidential elections.

Michael S. Olympios 

Michael Olympios is a partner at Allied Business Consultants Ltd. Mr. Olympios has worked as a financial journalist in the early years of his career and later joined the securities industry where he initially worked as a broker in Cyprus. Later he also worked in various investment banking projects. In 2002 he founded Allied Business Consultants, focusing on Corporate Governance, Strategy, Investor Relations and Management Consulting. Clients include mostly publicly traded companies including financial and banking institutions. Mr. Olympios is also a researcher on Corporate Governance and he has published a paper on Corporate Governance and Family Firms – Evidence from Cyprus with Professor Marios Mavrides. The paper was presented at a conference organized by the European Corporate Governance Institute where he is also a member. Mr. Olympios has published numerous articles on corporate governance and he has a regular column in Financial Mirror.

 Mr. Olympios graduated from Radford University in 1996 with a degree in Economics and later received his MBA from Maastricht School of Management.
